Dana (sanskrit: Generosity)

At the Edinburgh Buddhist Centre we love to give the gift of the Buddha’s teaching to all who wish to hear it. It is one of the traditional ways of expressing that most basic Buddhist principle- Dana or Generosity.

We teach the Dharma (Sanskrit word for the teaching of the Buddha) hoping that it will change people’s lives for the better, showing a way to become more content, more authentic and to live more in line with reality.

It does have a potential to have a radical impact. How do you put a price on that?

Ideally we would like to build up an atmosphere of mutual generosity in our small community where we would not charge for the gift of the Dharma

Ideally people would give out of gratitude in direct relation to the amount they felt they had benefited. But we do need to pay the bills and mortgage each month.

There’s the rub. That’s where the Dana (Generosity) comes in…  A way of paying an amount you can afford, regularly so that we can pay the bills and you can come to classes.
